What is the Culebra Fishermen's Association?
We are a community-based 501(c)3 non-profit corporation led by small-scale commercial fishermen elected by the community.
Our Mission
To promote sustainable fishing that contributes to food security and the well-being of our community, thus transforming the Puerto Rican fishing sector towards more responsible maritime development.
Our Values
We value solidarity, environmental conservation, citizen participation, collective cooperation, social justice, non-discrimination, gender equity, transparency, and accountability.
Our Goals
Foster and provide training for commercial fishermen.
Provide equitable access to fresh, high-quality fish and seafood for consumers.
Collaborate with agencies to protect and steward local marine ecosystems.
Conduct community activities to raise public awareness of the cultural, historical, and environmental value of fishing.
Collaborate and conduct studies to improve ecosystem knowledge and enhance sustainable practices.
Our Policies
We adopt the voluntary guidelines for sustainable fishing developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in order to position ourselves at the international forefront.
We are committed to conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources, according to Sustainable Development Goal 14 agreed upon by the United Nations.
Our Achievements
We have a total membership of 43 partners in our association. These include 17 commercial fishermen and 26 other partners in other roles of the supply chain.
Our association is recognized by the government of Puerto Rico and holds a Bonafide Farmer certification.
We have the extensive facilities of Villa Pesquera.
We have led community participation in the restoration and redesign of infrastructure in a resilient manner. We incorporate aquaculture methodologies, solar energy systems, and cisterns with rainwater collection.
We have made more than 13 philanthropic donations to contribute to the Culebra community.
We implemented a modern fish market system focused on food safety and accessibility of local fish.
